Describe (using your own words) why IP addresses for devices connected to the Internet are due to run out shortly and propose what possible solutions have been put forward to address this massive ‘time-bomb’?

IP addresses are displayed in four octets, octets being 2^8, 256 numbers ranging from 0 – 255. Obviously this seems like there is a massive range of combinations that can be used for IP addresses; 256^4 = 4,294,967,296. So there is over four billion combinations.

After the introduction of broadband, Internet address usage went up by 80 million per year between 2000 and 2003 and then a further 130 million in 2004 and over 150 million in 2005. This shows the usage of IP addresses is rapidly increasing at a huge rate, increasing by more each year. In 2005 there was roughly 1.5 billion IP addresses left available, clearly with the increasing amount of use there will come to a point where there will not be any IP addresses left available.
